The Five Blue Zones

In the modern world, the five blue zones – the places with the highest concentration of centenarians in the world – have been identified. These are Okinawa Japan; Sardinia Italy; Nicoya Costa Rica; Ikaria Greece; and Loma Linda California. All these areas boast beautiful coastlines and seaside locations that contribute to the longevity of their inhabitants.

The common thread running through the Blue Zones is the fact that they are all located near the sea. Living by the sea has many profound health benefits, including the potential to increase longevity just like these five Blue Zones have done. Studies have suggested that the secret to a longer life may be due to an increased level of physical activity and exposure to sunlight - both of which can be found in abundance in seashore communities.

Each of these regions is home to a unique set of cultural and environmental factors that contribute to their population’s longevity and its inhabitants' extraordinary health. In Okinawa for example, Okinawans follow what is called “hara hachi bu” or eating until 80% full which helps keep weight off. Also in Okinawa people have what is known as a “moai” system which is when people form small clusters or groups who offer wide-ranging support and assistance throughout their lives. In Loma Linda California the Seventh-day Adventist Church encourages its members to abstain from smoking and drinking alcohol.

From the Greek island of Ikaria to the Caribbean people of Barbados, studies have shown that those who live by the sea with access to clean air from the ocean are likely to experience health benefits such as increased immunity, better heart health, improved circulation and fewer respiratory issues than those living inland. In the Mediterranean the diet of the people living in the blue zones consists of mostly fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, nuts and legumes. This traditional way of eating is rich in antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and promote overall health.

Living near the sea also appears to be associated with better health outcomes in the blue zones as well. In Sardinia the centenarians cite the positive effects of the nearby ocean breeze and the mineral-rich air they breathe during their morning walks along the beachfront. The beaches are also a great gathering place for socialising with friends and family which has been linked to increased happiness and longevity. Furthermore, the salt air and the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks can also provide calming effects that can help promote relaxation and reduce cortisol levels - the hormone associated with stress. This, in turn, has been linked to a longer life expectancy and improved wellbeing.

In the Blue Zones, the sea offers a rich source of nutrients, minerals and vitamins that are believed to be beneficial for the body and mind. The people living in the five Blue Zones enjoy diets rich in plant-based foods and seafood, fresh fruit, vegetables and nuts while avoiding processed foods as much as possible. This way of life helps promote healthy eating habits, physical movement and social connections with family, friends and the community. The people who live in these areas often incorporate the sea into their everyday lives; they swim in the ocean, practice yoga near the shoreline or simply take leisurely strolls along the beach. These activities can contribute to improved physical and mental health while providing an opportunity to connect with nature and the environment. Additionally, time spent by the sea has been shown to reduce stress levels and provide a sense of calmness.

Overall, it seems that adopting the healthy lifestyles practiced by those living in the blue zones could improve the health and wellness of the global population. Living by the sea is not just limited to these five renowned Blue Zones - anyone can reap the benefits of healthy living by the sea. From the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean, the wonders of the ocean are available all over the world for everyone to enjoy.
