“Interior design trends to look out for in 2022. Here are my predictions based on what I see evolve and gain in popularity. Are you curious to see how home design is taking shape in 2022?”
There have been many challenges we have faced over the past year and across the globe. What this has taught us is that our homes are our sanctuaries. In the face of adversity, our homes should make us feel comfortable and bring us joy.
So what is coming next? I would love to share my predictions of some interior design trends for 2022. (And, I expect to see some favourites from 2021 once again next year…)
Take a guess what the main paint manufacturers chose for the colour of the year 2022. Read on to find out…
“2022 will be all about adding comfort and warmth to the home. Expect to see a lot more neutrals, warm and natural mid-tones - inspiring positivity and wellness.”
Calming neutral hues and natural shades remain in our interiors — soft whites, taupe, beige and grey sit along more earthy tones and sandy desert colours colours. We will be seeing more earthy tones along with white-on-white highlighting the use of more organic and raw materials. Tinted shades of green refresh an interior in a subtle way.

“Clean lines, neutral colour schemes and high-quality art and design pieces will form a New Minimalism that will be the fashionable interior trend of 2022.”
During the pandemic, many of us got rid of unnecessary possessions (not only in our wardrobe, but also in our homes) to feel more at peace and organised. We are striving for a more simplistic aesthetic and free space, sticking to one or two main materials for furniture, such as wood or metals, and limit ornamentation.
Following on from trend No.1, minimalism is directly related to the use of softer colours such as shades of white, beige and other neutral colour schemes.

“In this ‘new way of living’ we need to pay more attention to the functionality, space planning and ergonomics in our homes.”
During the course of the pandemic our homes have become multi-functional spaces — a place of work and re-creation, they have become the playground, the gym, the cinema and the restaurant! Creating multi-functional areas dedicated to the different needs and requirements of this new way of living requires new ways of thinking how to combine our office and our home life under one roof.
One trend I am seeing is the installation of room dividers that section-off spaces (these can be permanent or temporary installations) as well as shelving, platforms and ladders to utilise vertical space. In this ‘new way of living’ we need to pay more attention to the functionality, space planning and ergonomics in our homes. I expect 2022 to feature innovative ideas on room-dividing tactics to create multi-functional spaces.

“Having worked remotely for some time now, we have come to realise that functionality, practicality, and aesthetics are equally important.”
People have realised during the pandemic that working at the kitchen counter or on the sofa is not the most comfortable way of working and with the switch to remote working, people tend to dedicate a space in the home for home-based working - that is fully equipped and comfortable. Home offices come in all shapes and sizes from a dedicated room to a fold-away desk.
*Remember, you are working from home not living at work…

“Mixing shades of green in furniture and decor to create an organic design and colour story will be popular in 2022.”
We will be seeing more nature-led colours in hues of green. The colour green is calming and soothing; and is a symbol of wellness. Green will be incorporated in wall paints, green wall coverings and accessories. Shades of green will appear more in earthy hues, moss greens, herbal tones as well as greenish blues in the oceanic spectrum.

>> How To Choose Colour
“Sustainability remains one of the key interior design trends in 2022. The emphasis on natural elements continues to grow from the previous year, and this aesthetic is becoming even more refined.”
People become more aware of the environment and concepts about sustainable design options and eco friendly products. I hope that the ‘trend’ to choose recycled, reused, and using certified sustainable sources will become the norm. Our love for more organic materials and elements inside the home is growing. This applies to home decor and furniture to surround ourselves with more natural materials and textures such as stone, marble, granite or wood. Natural materials not only add warmth to a space but also create a more calming aesthetic.
We are even seeing a subtle merge of retro and zen elements in 2022. Blonde wood, clean lines, floating surfaces and new minimalist designs set the tone for more zen-living. These spaces very much adopt the less-is-more approach while keeping the decor organic and natural.
I (hope) and expect to see furnishings, flooring and other architectural elements that use more environmentally-friendly materials such as reclaimed wood, bio-glass, cork, bamboo or jute.

“It looks like the nostalgic revival style that started in fashion is going to be popular in 2022. Yep, the 70s and 80s come back to life... Is this an ode to happier times of the past and a cry for comfort?”
Is ‘retro’ really coming back?!? We are witnessing a comeback of marble and terrazzo already, 80’s pastel colours and pops of colour, burnt oranges and moss greens, as well as wavy, fluted, circular and rounded shapes.

“This is not a new trend but a trend that is coming back. Sofas, tables, lamps, poufs, vessels and decorative items - they’re all getting curfy...”
We will be seeing more furniture with softer edges and decor with wavy shapes as well as wavy patterns in mirrors, cutlery, etc. Yes, curves are taking shape in 2022. These softened forms bring lightness into interiors. Textiles such as velvet support the softer shapes which bring an elevated touch to refined interiors.
Well, psychology says that rounded shapes are good for the soul (so they say;); rounded shapes create a sense of flow and instil calm.

“The smart home will get smarter. I believe we will be seeing more furniture not only with automated features but also more versatile, multi-functional furniture. Our living spaces will become more easy-flowing with higher functionality.”
I think there will be inevitably more furniture with integrated technology or design with function in mind such as speakers that double as decor or remote-controlled shelving revealing the tv sitting behind it. Yes, I really expect to see more versatile and convertible furniture used in our interiors. Stay tuned…

“Whilst black and white is the best example of a monochromatic colour scheme, any colour has the ability to be used in monochrome design, yet the most popular seem to be neutral tones. I feel these work beautifully in a very harmonious and calming way.”
A monochrome colour palette uses the same colour repeated in different tints, tones and shades. Monochromatic design can take the shape of black and white, blues and greens. We will be seeing this modern monochromatic trend using more neutral and calming colour combinations, especially in moss greens, burnt oranges and sandy desert tones.

“Transparent light fittings and glassware decor items reflect light and create an open and inviting atmosphere in the home. Transparent design is becoming more popular.”
Glass light pendants, glass vessels, handmade or hand-blown glass — transparent materials seem to be a trend for 2022. Oversized light pendants are among the many ways to incorporate glass.
In line with my trend prediction No.6, glass is a key sustainable material.
“Trends come and go .. but biophilic design is one that is here to stay. Biophilia encapsulates our connection with all things natural.”
The pandemic has shown how important it is to surround ourselves with nature for our mental well-being. We are yearning to have more nature (and organic items) in our homes. Indoor plants can clean the air, add greenery to the space and even boost your mood. We are bringing more authentic greenery into our homes.

“We’ll put more emphasis on creating an environment that caters for our pets’ needs that transforms our homes into a purrrrrfect home for our pets, and us.”
Pet ownership has increased during the pandemic and more people are looking for ways to introduce pet-friendly measures in their home. I call it pet-friendly interior design … it is about creating a functional yet stylish home that works in the most compatible way for you and your pet.
